New Life

This morning a little baby was born... a little black baby calf.

We didn't get to see the actual birth, but we saw the baby just shortly afterwards.  My parents raise pasture-grown, grass-fed beef and they have a pasture full of pregnant mamas.  This was the first birth of the year.

Getting to see the little calf protected and loved by his mama and nursing for the first time was so sweet I found myself blinking back tears.  The wonder of it...

We walked quietly away when the new baby closed her eyes and looked ready for a rest after her exciting morning.

I just couldn't wait to share her with you.

You can read more about the baby calf at my mom's blog here.  :-)

  3. What an amazing moment to witness. I got to see the birth of our neighbor's calf last spring and it really changed me. I couldn't eat a hamburger without thinking about that innocent calf for quite a while.

Your pictures as so pretty as always!

  8. I'm so glad you did share this with us! Baby anythings are cute, but baby cows are especially adorable. Look at that nose! I could just kiss it. I have to admit I'm a pescitarian (meaning the only meat I eat is fish), but I'm sure your folks are raising happy cows!

  9. Calving season was always my favorite time of year when we lived on the ranch. I sure miss driving through the pastures and seeing all those itty bitty sweet little faces. And fun fact, did you know that cows have babysitters? I kid you not. Hubby told me that he often saw all the calves laying under a tree with one mama close by to watch over them, while all the other mama's were off grazing. I think that's pretty neat.
