Fresh Eggs

All nine of our hens are laying now and we've been enjoying an abundance of fresh eggs every day.  I realize this may sound a little silly, but our chickens have become a part of our family... as much as we love and enjoy their eggs, we enjoy them too.

All the different shades are so pretty.  For two months we had only blue eggs, so it was actually pretty exciting when we had our first brown eggs!  We've had enough for us every day, and we've also gotten to share a little with family, friends and neighbor.

As our hens have grown, it's been fun getting to know their different personalities.  They all run to us when we step outside and love foraging around in the grass and dirt during the day.

Growing up, it was my chore to help out in the care of our family chickens.  I loved them and would gather their eggs every day, wash and put them away... I even had a few egg buying customers (smile).

Who would have known that years later I would have two little girls doing the same...

  3. I love all your pictures here. I grew up on a farm and it was my job to collect the eggs, too. Those are some fond memories-especially the low sounds of clucks and "coos" that came from the chicken coop when I went in-Great post- xo Diana

  7. Aren't chickens fun? We're down to only 4 hens here, and afraid (egads!) that we might have to buy some eggs over the winter.

  8. I love fresh eggs!!!! My neighbor keeps me supplied (I'm so blessed :) ) but the chickens are molting right now and not laying. Had to buy some at the store. They look all washed out and aren't nearly as appetizing!

On a side note...can I ask you what your blogger template is and how you get your photos so big? When I make mine extra large they get cut off. Is it editing? Format? Any help would be appreciated!!

    1. The store bought eggs just are not the same! We were fortunate before having our own hens to have a neighbor that shared with us a little too. :-)

You might just need to adjust the widths of your blog. It's very easy to do... go to your Blogger Dashboard, Template, Customize and Adjust Widths. My entire blog is set at 1064 px. Hope that helps some!

  10. Your chickens and eggs are beautiful... But, the last photo of your girls washing eggs, melts my heart. They are so precious. I would love to have chickens. I think it would get too cold in the winters in central IL. I may to check into it further. You are making me want some very much!

  11. Beautiful pictures, as usual. My 3 boys love gathering our eggs, but it's a little bit of a challenge as one of the chickens (Old Rusty) has decided to be "broody". She just does not want to get up, then she'll click and make kind of a low rolling "bawk" as the boys get the eggs. We'd don't have a rooster right now, so I'm sure she would be disappointed with what "hatched". Our girls have shut down on egg production up here, as the weather turned cold this week. Thanks for sharing the pretty pictures, hope you have a great day, Jodie

  22. Oh what fun. Look at your girls so busy at their chore of tending to the eggs. So cute. Thank you for taking me down memory lane as well. Reminiscing of gathering eggs at my Aunt and Uncle's farm in South Dakota when I was a wee little one. Smiles!

  26. The eggs are really pretty in your vintage bowl. The colors make them look so festive. We had chickens growing up, but we only got brown & white eggs. I guess it depends on the breed? Unfortunately we can't have farm animals where we live, but I wish we could.
The photo of your girls at the sink is precious! They grow up so fast.
I just recently discovered your blog and have been enjoying it very much. I have a blog too, and I'd like to invite you to visit me when you have time. I would be honored.

  27. Hello Andrea,

your girls are so precious ! You have such a wonderful place to raise children and a gorgeous house!

I was wondering, as a "wannabe" homesteader, how much time a day to you spend on the chickens? And the garden ? I'm trying to figure out if I will still be able to work (from home) with all the chores related to the homestead.

    Thank you !

    Stephanie

    1. Thank you so much, Stephanie! Yes, you definitely will have the time. :-) I check our chickens in the morning, gather their eggs, let them out and then put them back in their house in the evening and check their food and water again. They are so easy to care for and SO much fun! If you are worried you won't have a lot of time to spend gardening, just plant a small garden, enough for your family to eat. I love spending time gardening during the summer - although the weeds did get the best of me this year, but I tried not to let it bother me. ;-) I still work from home (only part-time) but haven't had to make any adjustments time-wise for chickens or gardening. Hope that helps!
