Bathroom Update

I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving!  Ours was wonderful and I suppose I'm still basking in the memories... I haven't even removed the pumpkins from our front porch yet (smile).

We recently completed a fairly inexpensive and quick update to our bathroom.  We had company staying with us over the Thanksgiving holiday and it provided a great source of motivation to get everything completed!

BEFORE (during a walk-through before purchasing):

 AFTER:

A couple years ago we made a few improvements to the bathroom but other projects took priority and we finally got around to replacing the ceiling, walls and fixtures.

I'm going to be honest here and mention that while we love our old farmhouse, there are times that it can be very exhausting and frustrating (especially for my husband).  Nothing is square, and there are always obstacles when working on any project.   The biggest obstacle in this room was installing a bathroom fan, believe it or not, a bathroom essential that had never been added.  Justus finally purchased one of the smallest fans he could find because of the lower ceiling and because we were unable to vent it through the roof.  After dealing with excess moisture in the room, we were pretty thrilled to have a bathroom fan, even if the placement wasn't ideal!

Justus pretty much made every decision on the bathroom, and I really love what he did, even down to the mirror choice.  We both wanted a wood ceiling (too many years dealing with sheet-rock peeling paint, in both houses we have owned) and Justus chose pine planks, which I coated with poly to protect from moisture.  Although wood ceilings tend to darken a room quickly, the natural pine really kept the room light and fresh.

Justus installed wood beadboard walls to match the rest of the house, which we then painted white.  We were so happy to say goodbye to the faux lineolum walls!

Really the only choice I made for the bathroom were the light fixtures.  I wanted to find something that looked just right and I spent too much time searching online before finding these Martha Stewart fixtures from Home Depot.  I loved them even more when Justus brought them home from the store and installed them.  I love the look of a single sconce on each side of the mirror but I was very nervous that it wouldn't let off enough light; I'm happy to say that is not the case at all.

Because the bathroom is small, we kept it as simple, light and uncluttered as possible.  Justus made a towel peg rack from some reclaimed wood and we hung a single picture.

We absolutely love these oak shaker pegs from Lowe's and have used them for a couple projects now.  And hanging towels from pegs is so much easier than a towel bar!

Eventually I'd love to repurpose a dresser into a sink here, but that's a project for another day.  Our next big project is putting in a bathroom upstairs (eek)!

Lastly, a look at the other side of the bathroom where Justus built some cupboards and shelves last year.  (You can read that post here.)

And while we're on the subject of the bathroom, my highlight of the week is having an almost potty trained little two year old (Rosetta)!

I hope you have a great week.  Thanks for taking a little tour of our bathroom!

  1. Gorgeous!!! I absolutely love the pine ceiling with all of the details in the wood. You two did an amazing job. Does the installation of an upstairs bathroom mean that you currently have one bathroom with three women in the house? :)

    1. Thanks, Deni! Yes, I'm sad to say that is exactly what it means! :-) In our previous home we had two bathrooms and we often commented that when we moved, we wanted to buy something with a huge master bathroom! I laugh every time I think of that. Amazingly, we've adapted well enough but it's always an adventure when we have company... this weekend we had eight people in our home with one bathroom! We do hope to install the new bathroom the beginning of the new year... as soon as we can find the time! :-)

  2. It looks wonderful! I love the wood ceiling especially. And I've found that single sconces on either side of a mirror is better lighting than a fixture above the mirror. Enjoy your lovely new bathroom!

  6. Love your bathroom and boy how I wish I had a Justus! LOL! I do everything myself here but I'm not as talented as that young man! You've almost convinced me to start painting everything white and I do love beadboard. What a lovely home you are creating.

  10. I love it! I love small country style bathrooms. I think they have so much charm. Keeping it uncluttered and using white on the walls was the best thing you could've done for that space too! Great job!

  18. Oh Andrea! I love, love the bathroom makeover! It's so fresh and inviting! I love the shower curtain too!! Congratulations on the potty training! I recently went through that with my 2 year old daughter and thankfully she took right to it - phew... We have a big trip coming up in January so the pressure was on to get her trained.

  20. the bathroom looks great! I love the white and simple touches with the peg rack and one art piece. The shower curtain gives a great pop of color too!
You mentioned that Justus wasn't able to vent the fan through the roof. I hope he was able to vent it out somewhere else. I remember watching on a DIY program on HGTV where they redid a bathroom and there was a fan that wasn't vented out properly. They found MOLD! EEEk! I don't want y'all to get mold. So hopefully he vented it out another way.

    1. Thank you, Cheryl! Yes, the fan is still properly vented outdoors, it's just mounted on the wall instead of the ceiling. :-)

  25. Go Justus! Great job. I think keeping it simple was wise and continued the "simplicity" feel of your charming home. Love the ceiling and red shower curtain. Now tuck a few Christmas greens in there and call it done. I have to share that when we had our first little bungalow home, my husband remodeled our bath as well. At the time, I did purchase an old dry sink and an old pine medicine cabinet. It did turn out cute. When we moved though, the dry sink I adored had to stay. The medicine cabinet was not to be left behind. It now hangs in our powder room. Thank goodness it was easy to replace with a mirror. Oh memories. Thanks Andrea and Justus for taking me there..... I love seeing the development of your sweet home. Isn't it great to have a husband that is so handy and talented?

  26. The shower curtain is SO beautiful, I just love it! And I agree about pegs for hanging towels. I have redone two bathrooms out of three in our house (hope to get the last one done over Christmas break) and the first thing I do is get rid of the towel rings! My kids have a much easier time hanging their towels on a peg.

  27. Simply lovely! What kind of planks did you use for the ceiling (t &g?) and did you drywall underneath of them or nail them directly to the joists? Did you use sheets of beadboard or t & g for the walls? I didn't see any seams. :) Love you house and the style you use - classic!

    1. Thank you so much, Farrah! We used 1 x6 tongue and groove pine planking for the ceiling (from Home Depot) and we nailed them into the existing sheetrock, but you can nail them into the joists if you don't have sheetrock. For the walls, we used beadboard tongue and groove planks (from either Lowe's or Home Depot). These are individual pieces, about 4" wide, which is why you don't see a continuous seam. Both are fairly affordable, especially for using all wood. Hope that helps!

    2. One more note, the beadboard tongue and groove on the walls might actually be called wainscoating in the store.

  30. It certainly feels a lot more refreshing than the old one! And you guys were able to do a lot with it, despite the limited space. And I love the wooden ceilings and walls. Kinda reminds me of a sauna. Cheers!
