Old Crocks and Silverware

Antique silverware in our kitchen is a simple pleasure I never tire of.  Displayed or in use, I find it beautiful.  Like anything old, I often wonder where it has been and in what homes it once belonged.

I've shown you our set of matching antique silver plate flatware we use on a daily basis (here) but I also have a couple sets of mismatched antique silverware.

I keep both sets in small vintage crocks.  This set of silverware is unfortunately only for display and you may have noticed it before displayed on my kitchen cupboard.  I purchased this crock at an old hardware store (which also has some antiques for sale).  It was a little pricier than what I normally would pay, but I instantly fell in love with the original label still displayed and knew I would regret leaving it behind.

The pieces inside are stunningly beautiful... I had actually forgotten about some of the intricate patterns and enjoyed taking them out again for these photos.  The majority have lovely floral patterns but sadly they are chipped in places.

Of course I knew this piece would come home with me when I saw the monogrammed "A" (smile).

My second crock I keep on our kitchen countertop and I might quickly grab a spoon when I make a cup of tea in the morning or need a fork for a snack.  This crock I purchased at a local antique store for less than ten dollars.  I knew the blue stripe would be just perfect for our kitchen.

It's always nice to have extra serving spoons and forks and these get used often.  I never mind that they might not match my other serving utensils.  (Looking at these now, I suppose I probably should have polished them before taking photos!)

But my favorite pieces in this collection are two small spoons and two small forks.  I'm not sure why they are so much smaller than what you would normally see, but they are just the perfect size for a toddler that is learning how to use utensils.

As you can imagine, these pieces I simply refer to as Rosetta's (smile).

Warm weather is in our forecast for the weekend and I am hoping the rain will stay away long enough for us to spend the majority of our Saturday outdoors, particularly as we finally beat the flu bug out of our house!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  1. Enchanting post...

Lovely to see things around a blogger's home. Not polished first, is best too! :-)

You beat the Flu Bug! Hoooooray! An out of doors celebration of some sort, is certainly called for.
    Good luck with the weather!

  2. Glad y'all are on the mend. I didn't collect old silver until I started seeing it all over blog land. You have some pretty pieces and I love your crocks. I could kick myself for not buying a nice one last weekend when we were on the road and I stopped at an antique mall. I hope to get some much need yard work done this weekend in the much warmer weather. Is this January?

  3. We have mismatched utensils for every day--bought because they were inexpensive, but I've come to really like them. I like the variety of patterns. Not matching means you get to enjoy a lot of different sets. We have mismatched plates, too, and I like those for the same reason. Your silver pieces are really beautiful, just as they are. :-)

  8. Your silverware in vintage crocks look so pretty! Maybe I should do this with my regular flatware, that way I can put my three year old to work emptying the dishwasher! Its too hard for him to place each piece in its own little tray but he could stick it all in a crock. :)

  9. Old silver and silverplate is a love of mine beginning with my mom discovering she had her grandmother's sugar spoon tucked away and gave it to me! Those smaller spoons and forks are possibly from youth sets or from the specialty services so popular in times past. I have smaller spoons called 5 o'clock spoons, bigger than a demitasse spoon, smaller than a teaspoon. Such a great idea to display them in crocks!

  11. I love old silver flatware and yours is beautiful in the old crocks. The set you use everyday is beautiful and I'm glad you're giving your daughters the experience of eating with them even when it's just family there. My favorite silver pieces are not our wedding silver, although I've come to love it again, but are odd ones I've picked up inexpensively. My special favorites are soup spoons--the large bowl like ones--and ladles, from very small to very large. I just like holding them in my hand.

I think old silver looks especially nice in a farmhouse like yours where the pristine whites you have used are their background.

  12. Hi Andrea, Love these photos. I so agree. My house has so many pieces and things that are from the another period, another place another time. I love it so much. My claw foot tub is from 1912. I love getting things and wondering who used it, what house it was in, who owned it. Love it.
    So sorry you were sick.
Love the photo of your daughter's hands.

  15. I love how you keep all of your old silver in the pretty crocks. Your home is so suited for that. I have collected old mismatched pieces as well and at last count had service for 16. I also found an old set in Michigan monogrammed with the letter H. Not ours, but a beautiful old set in the original box.

Never worry about polishing it, the tarnish is part of the charm!

    Jane

  31. When I saw your photo link, I came right over. I love using old crocks for holding flatware. We have very limited cabinet space, so crocks and pitchers hold various sets of flatware. Thanks for sharing yours......old crocks and silver make me smile.
