The summer issue of New American Homesteader is out (giveaway below)! This was such a fun issue to contribute to - for one thing I was writing and taking photos of something I love to do (preserving), but I also got to do a lot of it with my mom, and we had such a great time working together. My grandma, and then my mom, have always preserved homegrown foods and they are such an inspiration to me.
This issue, like the first, is packed from cover to cover with lovely photos, inspiring stories and guides to all things summer, like gardening, canning & preserving, and much more.
While preparing for this issue, we took a lot of photos and edited a lot of photos! Not all made it into the magazine, but the above photo (one of my favorites) did. I took this photo at my mom's house... I was there to help take photos of her preserving corn, but ended up emptying her entire pantry cupboard and filling it with her preserved goods. I'm not sure there is anything more appealing to me than rows of canned goods in a kitchen... my grandma's kitchen is like this and it brings back so many wonderful memories.
There are easy instructions on how to can goods like green beans, tomatoes and pickles and, even easier, freezing corn and berries. With summer's bounty approaching, I'm looking so forward to doing some preserving!
I feel hesitant to mention this (it not being easy to talk about myself), but it was such an honor to have one of my photos selected for the cover. I snapped this photo last summer of local strawberries, never dreaming it would be on the cover of a magazine. I think I like that best of all though - it wasn't snapped with any other intention than enjoying the beauty of the season's first fruit. There's so much joy in canning and preserving and I hope you get a chance to pick up the issue!
The issue should be available on newsstands as of yesterday and hopefully you can find it wherever magazines are sold. (If you would like to purchase online, you can find the previous issue here and the new issue soon.)

I also have a couple extra issue that I requested just so I could give them away here - I am so thankful for each of you taking the time to read. You encourage me and make me smile and I'm so grateful for that.

ReplyDeleteMy sister has jars and jars that she cans each year from produce in her beautiful garden. Last year I canned several jars of jam and jelly, and I loved lining them up and photographing them. It is great that you and your mom share this experience.

I think I have pantry envy! What you did with your mom's pantry is so cool. Did she leave it like that? So happy that this blogging thing has opened doors like this for you. No one deserves it more.
ReplyDeleteThank you, sweet Ann. No, the pantry cupboard has doors so she likes to put her not-so-pretty pantry goods there. :-) We also emptied her pantry with the red screen door though and when we put it back together we displayed the canned goods there. It looks so pretty!
DeleteCongrats on the cover! It does feel more special when you get the cover doesn't it. I was shocked to see my dining room on the cover of FCS magazine. I will be looking for this.
ReplyDeleteyou're so lucky to have someone to help and show you how it is done. I remember doing this many, many years ago when my children were very young, and then life got in the way. I just retired and would like to start doing this again for purely creative and financial reasons. Thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeletechrisgoudeau64@gmail.com
Well done! It looks fantastic - the cover looks delicious ;)
ReplyDeleteSo happy for you! Someday your girls will be canning on their own and will always have this to follow. How fun to say " this is my mom and grandma's article". The cover is beautiful!
ReplyDeletePatty
Congratulations, Andrea!
ReplyDeleteYour pure and simple life is something that most of us are jealous of. It is not a wonder your beautiful photo was chosen . Congratulation ! Looking forward to more in the future !!!

ReplyDeleteThis magazine is new to me but looks wonderful. I'll be keeping an eye out for future issues now.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! I am so happy for you!!!! How exciting! I love to can. My favorites are the jams, jellies, and of course applesauce! This year I will be teaching my son's girlfriend. I am really looking forward to sharing this with her. I am hoping to start a new tradition!!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! That is so exciting for you. I have made jams in the past and I freeze corn in season. I would love to learn more and try some new things. My sister makes the best salsa with a friend. Those jars are a precious gift. We save them for a special treat! Your jars all lined up remind me fondly, of my grandmother. Ok, I would love to win a copy!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful picture of your mom's pantry, we'll have to ask her to show more pictures of where it is located at her farm. Would love to receive the magazine, as I doubt it will be in my area of eastern PA. melissabrock208@gmail.com. Thank you for your lovely photos.
ReplyDeleteCheck your blog on a daily basis to see if you have posted anything new. You are one of my favorites.

Congratulations for having your photo on the cover. So happy for you and your mom! Kathleen in Az sgeorge45@cox.net
ReplyDeleteCongrats! You should know that you are so awe inspiring! Funny story of your inspiration. I have been counting down the last 40 days and every day I send an email to my husband with How many days it is to my birthday with a picture of your canned goods and a picture of the wood shelf your wonderful husband made for your kitchen. I have asked my husband to make me one in which canned goods will line the shelves. I'll let you know if I have a shelf on my wall by my birthday. LOL Have a wonderful day! Haley (hkalla@gmail.com)
ReplyDeleteOops....email screw up, it's hkalla2@gmail.com
DeleteThat made my day! :-)

ReplyDeleteNice job here. I too grew up canning foods at an early age. When I got into high school and home ec, I was quite a know-it-all and refused to learn to can any other way than the way my mother taught me. I told the teacher..."That's NOT the way my mother does it!" Yes, I would love to have a copy of this magazine.
ReplyDeleteWell, how about that!! So cool - congrats :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to have an issue!! I have never read this magazine, so I would be excited to add it to my collection :D

Many Congrats! Such a pretty cover - I'd LOVE to win an issue. We live in a tiny town that only has a Walmart to shop at. They had a "pretty good" magazine selection, but I was VERY BUMMED yesterday to see that they cut it down to about 1/3 the size it was, no more fun reads :(

I haven't seen this magazine on the stands around here but it looks wonderful. Would love to check it out.
ReplyDeleteI looked for your special issue today at Joann Fabrics and Barnes & Noble. B & N were sold out already!! I wasn't lucky on the give away on your mom's blog; maybe today is my lucky day! :-) If not, I'll continue watching for it locally and online! Congratulations; can't wait to see it!
ReplyDeletemransom@gmail.com
For the person who asked about Andrea's colander . . . googled white enamel colander and got a bunch of hits - amazon.com, macy's and several others. I have Paula Deen's red spatter enamel one and a blue & white granite one that my cousin gave me as a hostess gift full of edible goodies! Good luck finding one. I love the old-fashioned simple kitchen wares, too!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your cover shot. I love your blog. Your style is so clean and simple but beautiful. Thanks for the magazine give away.
ReplyDeleteMy wife loved your article so much that she called the publisher and tried to get an annual subscription. Unfortunately they aren't offering that option right now. She did find out that there is going to be a third issue out in August so in addition to reading your upcoming article she's hoping that you'll have one in the third issue too. You've definitely created a long-term fan in her so please drop her line if you could as I know that would thrill her (dianavkeller@aol.com). As you can guess her name is Diana. Winning the second issue would be just icing on the cake... :)
ReplyDeleteYour momma's cupboard makes me very happy and I love your cover picture. Congrats. Linda R. (Phila burbs) (lindasryan59@yahoo.com)
ReplyDeleteHi Andrea, How exciting that you are featured in this magazine. I've never seen one, but will look later in the week when my daughter and I go on our outing. I have a jelly cupboard that my husband made me many years ago for my pickles and jelly. Oh, how I love to look at the neat rows all finished. Do you ever enter anything in your county fair? That is fun. I have cherries to put up now. Your friend in Arkansas.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on being featured in this magazine. The cover picture is lovely. I would love to win a copy. teresagann@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy all your pictures. It's your blog that I keep referring back to when my husband asks "what do you want your kitchen to look like?" The beauty here inspires me.

I really enjoy your blog and seeing the transformation of your farmhouse! :)
ReplyDeleteYou have a lovely blog. I keep a shortcut on both my computer and my android. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the magazine cover! I really like the picture of your mother's pantry stocked with home canned jars. I think I would enjoy this magazine- if I don't win, I'll look for it in the store.
