Cranberry Orange Relish and Thanksgiving

It's beginning to look a lot like Thanksgiving here...

What are your plans for the holiday weekend?

Every year we spend Thanksgiving with my husband's family.  It seems like the weather is almost always just perfect and we spend a lot of time playing outside after a huge, delicious meal.

I only have to contribute a few dishes and today I got a head start by making a cranberry relish.  This relish is made with cranberries and oranges... it's tart and sweet at the same time and brings back so many memories.  My mom always made this relish and a traditional cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving.

4 cups of cranberries and 1 quartered orange (including the peel) get thrown into the blender (or a food processor) until the mixture is thoroughly chopped.  Then add almost 2 cups of sugar and blend again until just mixed.

The relish tastes best after sitting in the refrigerator at least overnight.

But Jillian and I have already sneaked in several samplings... just to make sure it tastes all right, of course.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays and always has been.  Each year I find that I have so much to be thankful for...this year I count your friendships among my many blessings.

Happy Thanksgiving, friends!  I hope you have a wonderful holiday and weekend.

  11. Like everybody else is saying....

So adorable. Those dresses! I love the bare toes. This reminded me of a time - at Christmas - one year where the weather was so warm (in PA!) we were playing outdoors barefoot. I least we thought we NEEDED to be, you know?

I hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving. Ah, that relish with a side of turkey sounds fabulous. (smile!)

  13. Such cute girls you have, and those dresses! Adorable!

I love that cranberry relish, but I use a food mill attachment on my KitchenAid mixer. It makes it more chunky. I love its fresh taste! This year I'm making Ina Garten's cranberry conserve, which is also excellent. Happy Thanksgiving to you!

  15. I go all out with my Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, but one thing I never seem to make homemade is cranberry sauce/relish. I usually go with canned, but I really need to try my hand at this. It helps that you can make it ahead, too =) Your girls are so sweet. I have 3 girls, and I wouldn't have it any other way!

  21. Oh, the girls are too sweet! I sure miss my little ones now that they are big. They kinda won't go for the matching dresses anymore, but if they did, they'd be wearing those. I've been looking for a new cranberry recipe and now I've found it. We will be trying that relish. Have a wonderful holiday!
