My Random Thoughts on Blogging

1.  The friendships you will make... Sometimes what you least expect turns out to be the best part.  I've developed so many friendships as a result of blogging and they feel very real.  Often I feel that we have so much in common we would never run out of things to talk about.  Not only have I formed friendships with fellow bloggers, but I also think of many readers as friends.  I look forward to your visits and sweet comments more than anything else.  They are often what encourage me to keep blogging!

2.  Don't let anything stop you... I can't tell you how many times I have hesitated before publishing a blog post.  (Oh yes, it will definitely happen with this post.)  I can't tell you how many times I have felt like my blog posts are uninspiring and probably not worth sharing.  But despite that, I am so thankful I kept posting away... blogging has made me grateful for many things in my life.  I even started noticing little things I hadn't noticed before... like the new blossoms on a shrub and the way the start of a new season brings different scents and sounds.  So if you ever feel the urge to start a blog, I say go for it!

3.  Why do you blog... I really love blogging.  Why?  It's fun, it's rewarding, it's motivating, the list goes on and on.  I started my blog on impulse but I did read a book prior to starting entitled "Blogging for Bliss".  I think the title of the book sums up my feelings about blogging to this day.

4.  But it takes time and effort... When I first started blogging, my husband would frequently ask me if I enjoyed it.  When I answered yes, he would jokingly respond, "Good, because it sure takes a lot of time!"  And I really feel like this is true... blogging does take a lot of time and effort, so I think it's important to enjoy it.  My husband hasn't asked me this question in a long time... I guess he knows what my answer will be now!

5.  Capturing moments on camera... Developing a love of photography is something that has only happened since my blog.  I didn't even know how to turn a DSLR camera on!  Gradually during the past year I learned a little more as I went along, simply by trial and error.  It was a long time before I turned my camera to manual mode (yes, I had to google YouTube videos to figure out which button did what!) and I'm still learning.  But taking photos has turned out to be my favorite part of a blog post.  I love trying to capture a moment and I love trying to tell a story from a photo.  My camera is always nearby and I reach for it often to capture little things I enjoy.  Some of the photos get shared, but many are just random snapshots.

6.  Why did you start a blog anyway... Every now and then I get asked this question and I have to take a deep breath.  The easy answer is since that first day I discovered that there was such a thing as a blog, I have loved reading and discovering new blogs.  It was (and still is) like getting my favorite magazine on a frequent basis!  But, the hard and personal answer is... last year around this time my husband had made the decision to dissolve his (our) business of 8 years that he had put everything into and we were left picking up all the broken pieces.  It could have been so much worse, and I think we recognized that we had the important things to be thankful for, but it was still a difficult experience.  My husband took the first job he found, which meant he worked many weekends and evenings.  It was then, at the end of the day, when the girls were tucked into bed, I started my blog and began writing.  I guess you could say it was a little therapeutic for me.  Now I can happily say that my husband found a wonderful job about 6 months ago that he enjoys (not to mention the fact that he is home for supper each night and weekends) and we recognize now that dissolving the business was the right thing.

7.  Let's get personal... I think there are probably quite a few people that I know that consider me to be a private person. Then why do I have such a personal blog?  Hm, good question.  I think the answer to that is writing sometimes comes easier for me than talking.  (Unless I really know you, and then I'll talk your ear off!)  I remember even as a little girl I had a journal and I kept one all the way until I married.  Now that I think about it, I suppose that I still do keep a journal - just a very public one - ha!

8.  I think I'm getting used to it now... For a long time, only a handful of people I actually know knew about my blog.  Then I was a finalist for the Country Living award, and well, I think everybody knows now!  Recently I received a birthday card in the mail from our friend who is in her 80's and when I opened it up it said, "Make Justus cook the biscuits."  (Yes, she was referring to my biscuit post.)  I laughed out loud out at the mailbox!  I think it was then I realized I'm getting used to the people I love and know so well reading my blog!

9.  There's always reality... My huge to-do list this week isn't filled with fun, interesting projects; it's simply filled with reality.  My husband is a great sport, but he still rolls his eyes every time I take a picture of him; my oldest daughter loves to call me "mommy blogger" while giggling because she knows everyone will laugh and her mommy will get embarrassed; there's still loads of laundry to do, and dishes to put away.  Maybe that's why it's so appealing to take photos of pretty things!  (smile)

While we're getting personal, this is more along the lines of what our house looks like on a daily basis!

These random thoughts have been on my mind for a while now, probably since it's been over a year now since I started my blog.  I thought it was probably about time I shared a little more about myself (smile).

More than anything, I want you to know how much I appreciate your visits, sweet comments, and emails.  They are like little rays of sunshine in my day!

  6. I love a personal post and learning more about the people we visit everyday. :) I'm glad you still like to blog...yours is one of my very favorites, I come here often to get my fill of inspiration.

I was just thinking today about why I blog. I started almost four years ago to get through some rough times but it has really turned out to be a huge part of my life and it still amazes me how I feel like I know the people behind the blogs I adore.

Keep up the good work ... you deserve all the good things that come your way and I love when I see your name and a new post in my inbox. xo

  11. You are right, Andrea. Blogging does take a lot of time, but it's a great place to use your creativity, whether it is writing a thoughtful post, publishing pretty photos, or sharing something you've cooked up in your kitchen. Receiving a heartfelt comment from a reader makes it worth the effort. And just think, you've got a ready made journal to remember where it all started! I've enjoyed watching you build your blog and look forward to new posts. :)

  13. This post is an encouragement to me. I, too, started a blog last month for many reasons and at times wonder what I've done! And I haven't even gotten to the decent photography yet! I mostly want to journal online is this form and push myself in continued personal growth. I also want to actually finish decorating/remodeling a room in this house we've had for 25 years. Today I am very discouraged in the remodeling aspect so it was good to read your words. Thank you.

  17. Well written, darling - and you hit the nail right on the head.

I had two very blond daughters - your pic reminded me of when they were young. They are so adorable.

I can't believe you have only been blogging a little over a year now - and already been featured in magazines and receiving awards - that is so remarkable and AWESOME. I am a huge fan of your blog and hope - even though it takes so much time, and it DOES - you continue blog posting for a long long time.

    Best wishes and hugs.

  18. What a wonderful, honest post. I think so many of us started blogging to fill a space that needed filling and found it to be so much more than that! And I never even had a pen pal as a kid. ;) Love your style!

  22. It's nice to know a little of your backstory. Although our lives are very different, I can relate to so much of what you've written here. My blog started because my job was reduced. Rather than try to fill the income hole with something that would be for just a paycheck, I decided to change the way I was living and build my skills by learning how to blog. Although the job situation was hard, I'm now so grateful for it! I like to think things happen the way they are supposed to. Seems like that's true for you and me both. :-)

  23. Dear Andrea,
I have to say that your blog is full of inspirations for me, I agree with you when you say that is like getting one's favorite magazine! And your blog is definitely one of my favorite ever. I look forward to read news from you, and sometimes I find myself asking "what about Andrea"?
I like the simplicity, the neatness of your words and photos and the fact that your life is a common life, and you do just what a mum/ wife/ housekeeper does. Life is simple and we all have to see the beauty of simplicity!

  24. I, for one, am really happy you started blogging. Your's has quickly become a favorite!

  25. I really enjoyed this post, Andrea - hearing a bit more of your backstory was so interesting.

I've recently started my own blog - after threatening to for a year or so - and I'm struggling with the personal/public balance, since I am like you - a private person in real life. It's hard to open up - but good to hear that you have found it getting easier as time goes by.

Your photography inspires me to no end. I completely aspire to take photos the way you do, and I'm practising. I do have a question on that topic - I know your photos are so gorgeous because of your great eye for composition and styling, but do you mind sharing what type of camera you use?

PS - I also read Blogging for Bliss, and I loved it! It inspired me and I'm glad to hear you liked it too.

  34. Thank you Andrea for sharing your thoughts! I have often thought to myself when a blogger writes a beautiful post that she has put alot of time and effort into it to share with the world. 35. Great thoughts, Andrea. I started my blog last April. I never imagined the friends I would make along the way, you being one of my favorites. Some blogs are way out there in their un-liveable decorating styles and perfection. Yours is simple, real, pure life and that's why WE like it. It gives me hope for the future to see a young couple work so hard in their home and family. Thank you for being you, don't change. Keep looking for the little things to be thankful for. They are everywhere!

  36. Hi Andrea,

I agree with you! Blogging always seems to take more time and effort than we think and it isn't always lucrative.. however you WILL make lots of connections (as you already have!) The personal component has been a tough one for me and I've struggled (in my 50's) trying to figure out how to navigate the blogger.com issues. I had a glitch a few weeks ago and was on the fence about continuing. I found I missed it so much (it kinda sucks you in!) so my friend helped me with a little blog re-do and I'm up and running with my first new post out.

It's a journey and a worth while one! Keep up the wonderful work!

  37. How did I not see this post? I lOVED THIS SO MUCH! So glad you posted this. I love your thoughts and your words and the honesty in them. I guess that is why I blog and now find that I need to opposed to wanted to. I am a writer anyway, but aside from writing fiction it is my necessity to find a place at the end of the day where I can pour out my stress. It is a creative outlet that I believe we all need. Why? Because as much as we try to distance ourselves from the outside world at times, our basic necessity is to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. We are all connected, whether it is across the map or across the globe, our language differences and our cultural differences can never hide the fact that we are all in need of a connection, of finding out that yes we are not alone and that there are others out there just like us that feel what we feel and experience the same things we feel. Worries, stress, anxiety, joy, peace, we all need and want to know that our lives here are not lost or unimportant. We all count and we all have a desire to know that we are loved. Blogging does that and fills that need in us to connect and feel that our lives matter. I may only have 3 comments and you may have 89 but each comment validates our existance. I love blogging and am thankful for all my followers and for all the people I follow like you Andrea. And I too feel that I have established the beginning of life long friendships. You being one of them. Love your blog, never stop. xoxo Lisa

  41. Great post! I've only recently started wading into blog tide and am quickly being swept away by all the wonderful people, ideas, and beautiful creations. I've been visiting some favorite blogs for several years and always enjoyed doing that. Like you, I have had the same thoughts as you, such as "is what I have to say important to anyone but me?" It's funny about your husband saying it takes up a lot of time. In case your wondering, even though I'm a late-blooming blogger, my husband also comments about the time I spend doing it.

Blogging has really got me interested in photography and lately I love learning more about food photography. 49. Aw! I love your blog Andrea! This is a great post. I love blogging too. It's nothing successful or even that interesting but I do like doing my blog. I started because we moved to the Detroit area for two years with no family, no friends, and no church. I had a lot of time on my hands when I wasn't working and it usually involved cooking, decorating, thrifting, or painting projects. Everyone told me to post my recipes, decorating ideas, and furniture projects on to Facebook but I really didn't like doing that. I started falling in love with blogs as I searched for furniture painting ideas and that's when I decided to try it myself. Then I started my blog and then Pinterest happened and I started crafting a lot more. It's been a lot of fun for me too in meeting so many kind and supportive bloggers! Again, I so enjoy your blog! Have a great weekend. ~ Jamie P.S. I am a very personal person and I only talk the ears off of people I'm close to as well. That made me smile! :)

  51. So many things to comment on!

One: Your sweet, gentle spirit comes out in every post. It inspires me to write in a more inviting way.

Two: I love how warm yet open you have made your home. It seems like many of us would all like to get together for tea.

Three: Your entry on biscuits captured the very spirit of biscuits! Made me want to eat biscuits then and there. And again, it inspired me to work the angles on my own food photography.

Four: Thank goodness for blogging. I believe that every day is a good day when I blog.:) Still, I struggle with thinking, "Who really cares about what I have to say?" I wish I could not care about this...but I do.

Five: Good to know I am not the only one who spends a while on one entry. Easy reading is damn hard writing as they say.

    Thank you for being you

  54. Blogging is a personal journey. I told someone the other day, I'm sure I break every blogging rule out there (I even break my own rules about blogging ... HA), but I've always been a bit of a rebel, and, really, there are so many reasons to blog and so many ways to blog. I enjoy many different genres of music and the same holds true with blogs for me. By the way, yours is beautiful.

We had lost a beloved pet and my first blog post was about him. Telling silly stories and writing in the blog from time to time has been a peaceful outlet for me and I love it. Even though I don't have many followers who read the postings, I do enjoy the writing and will definately keep up with it. Thanks for your inspiration. xoxo

  58. Wow Andrea, this really speaks to me. What a great post. I am so happy to have come across your blog. I started blogging late last year because just because I wanted to share my ideas and creativity and to find keep my mind occupied. My husband was out of work and with that came lots of stress and worry and blogging made it a bit easier for me.. But sometimes I question if it's even worth it. The time, the writing, do people even care??? All of the same thoughts as you. I also had to learn how to use the camera. The angles, lighting.. I am so glad that I am not the only one who has questioned all of this. Thank you for speaking from your heart. You have an amazing talent, wonderful blog and a beautiful family. I am now be following. Hope you can visit me too..

  59. Andrea,
Blogging can be daunting, both for beginners and for veteran bloggers. Your post offers affirmation for all bloggers in areas that we all experience. Although I have only been blogging for a little less than a year, I am already finding that these nine random blogging thoughts were present in the very beginning and remain present even today, with just subtle shifts in perspective. I suspect these nine areas will always remain areas of consideration throughout the life of blogging, but will continue to shift and to change with even greater understanding and nuances as time passes.

As for as getting personal, you appear to have the fine balance of knowing what to share and what not to share. Much like a genteel Southern lady knows what is done and what is not done...or more aptly worded, knows HOW to do and HOW not to do.
